LEAD GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEER – OFFSHORE required by our Client within the Renewable Energy industry, to be assigned on a Contract basis, located in Boston, MA or fully remote.

POSITION SCOPE
 
This role sits within the Site Engineering Department of our Offshore Renewables business. The Lead Geotechnical Engineer is a critical role within the Offshore Renewables Business, focusing on the delivery of large-scale offshore wind projects in the US mainly, and supporting projects in Europe and other countries as needed.
 
Reporting to the US Engineering Management team, the Lead Geotechnical Engineer will be  responsible for implementing robust and cost-effective engineering strategies and plans, and will be responsible for tendering, negotiating, and managing multi-million-dollar offshore site investigation contracts. You will be responsible for leading site characterisation strategies using the data collected from offshore site investigations. You will also lead the geotechnical design activities for all projects in the offshore business, liaising with multiple other packages as required, and making recommendations for strategies to senior management whilst ensuring quality, best practices and excellent Health, Safety and Environmental standards are always applied. You will provide relevant ground engineering support to projects and the wider business stakeholders. 
 
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Act as principal technical contact within the offshore business in US for matters related to Ground Engineering.
  • Act as tender, project and program manager for large geotechnical site investigation and consultancy (including design) contracts ensuring high quality deliverables on time and within budget.
  • Provide advice and guidance on foundation selection, including design and analysis.
  • Provide advice for foundation and cable installation methodologies. This includes input into engineering and risk mitigation strategies.
  • Ensure compliance with industry best practice and awareness of latest developments in technology, including assessment of suitable of new technology to project pipeline.
  • Support the delivery of multi-contract packages within time and budget, observing the maximum respect for Health, Safety and the Environment and ensuring regulatory and  legal compliance. 
  • Support the certification process with independent verification bodies (where applicable) to reduce (geotechnical) design risk and enhance asset value.
  • Support relevant aspects of the transport and installation scopes 
  • Support the Development team on establishing robust business cases for future projects, identifying early ground risk, and developing site investigation and design strategies.
  • Ensure that ground conditions risk on all projects are identified and mitigated – making key engineering judgments, decisions and recommendations that will influence the nature of contracts.
  • Act as the Engineer of Record for the offshore business in the US.
  • Lead geotechnical joint industry innovation projects on behalf of the company
  • Ensure lessons learnt regarding offshore geotechnics/geophysics are captured, shared, and applied across the different projects

EXPERIENCE / QUALIFICATIONS

  • Extensive knowledge and experience of leading the Ground Engineering elements (including design) of large-scale offshore structures.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience of planning, managing, and executing offshore site investigations for large scale projects.
  • Extensive experience designing and working in the offshore industry, preferably offshore wind.
  • Ability to work, manage teams and manage decision making processes under pressure and to tight deadlines and budget constraints.
  • Innovative and creative thinker
  • Excellent knowledge of industry codes and standards and offshore regulations.
  • Proven experience in delivery of large packages/projects, including procurement, contract management, program management, cost and risk control. 
  • Educated to degree level in a relevant engineering discipline with a higher-level degree (e.g., MSc.) desirable.
  • Good working knowledge of geophysical datasets and surveys and metocean datasets as they pertain to ground engineering and foundation design.
  • Extensive knowledge of offshore wind foundation design in at least two of the following types; monopile, jacket, gravity-based structures, suction-buckets.
  • Working knowledge of ILA load mapping and dynamic structural design and analysis.  

Minimum Criteria

  • Educated to degree level in a relevant engineering discipline (Master’s Degree)
  • Extensive knowledge and experience of leading the Ground Engineering elements (including design) of large-scale offshore structures.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience of planning, managing, and executing offshore site investigations for large scale projects.
  • Registered Professional Engineer in good standing within the United States.
